How to Get Food Stamps in Georgia

Food Stamps
What are Food Stamps?
Food stamps can help you put food on the table when you need it most. Food Stamps are a government program that helps low income individuals, refugees, or victims of natural disasters buy food for free. In order to get Food stamps, you have to first apply for them.
The Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) offers instructions on how to apply in English, Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Hmong, Portuguese, Farsi, French, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese
Who qualifies?
To see if your eligible, the state asks you:
  • Are you a citizen?
  • Are you a resident of Georgia?
  • How many children are in your household?
  • What are your assets? This includes money that is saved in bank accounts or stocks. The more assets you have, the less likely you are to qualify.
  • What is your income? This includes money you earn from jobs but also other forms of income like baby-sitting, unemployment, or child support.
If you finish the eligibility tool above, it will tell you whether or not you will qualify and show you how much in food stamp benefits you can earn.
How to apply
To apply for food stamps, you can apply online, in person or by mail.
Georgia COMPASS allows customers to apply for Food Stamps online and check their potential eligibility for other DHR social services programs through the Pre-screening tool. Customers, who create an account in Georgia COMPASS, can check the status of their application online. Also, any Food Stamp recipient will be able to make changes to their household circumstances through Georgia COMPASS.
